2018 Descorchados:96’ Tasted: Jan 2021
As Tabalí’s catalog of pinots progresses, and especially as the vineyards along the banks of the Limarí River are left behind and move into the heavily calcareous coastal hills of Talinay, the wines lose their fruity character, or at least it stands back in favor of the earthy and saline notes typical of the marine influence and those calcareous soils. This Talinay comes from two hillside vineyards, both rich in limestone, one planted to clone 777 (one of the first to arrive in Chile), and the other with clones that arrived in 2010 from massal selections made in Burgundy, especially at Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, two of the most famous communes there. Those selections are now producing Chile’s best pinots. This Talinay has 30% of them in the final blend, and that comes through in its earthy aromas and salty flavors, as well as in the ripe red fruit flavors perceived on the backdrop, while the tannic tension speaks of the strength of the origin and its chalky claws on the palate. |
