2011’ BH Score: 93/Tasted: Apr 15, 2013 /Drink: 2023+ /Issue: 50
Tasting note: Much like the Musigny, this is really beautifully spicy but here there are intense earth and sauvage undertones to the mostly wild red berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and plenty of minerality to the focused, energetic and overtly powerful large-scaled flavors that culminate in an austere finish that displays noticeable gas which accentuates the firmness of the tannins. Even so, this is clearly a long-distance runner and like the Griotte, I would strongly advise buying this only with the intent to cellar it for at least a decade.
2012’ BH Score: 92 /Tasted: Apr 15, 2014 /Drink: 2024+/Issue: 54
Note: from a .13 ha parcel augmented by purchased fruit; destemmed
Tasting note: A spicy, cool and highly restrained nose features notes of various red berries, earth, humus and a hint of the sauvage. There is plenty of minerality that adds lift to the relatively supple middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a toasty finish that displays very good but not truly distinguished depth and length. To be sure the 2012 Bèze is a quality effort but it doesn’t seem, at least not at this very early juncture, to have that extra dimension present in say the Griotte or Musigny.
2014’ Vinous Rating :92’
Tasting Note;Moderately saturated medium red. Pungent aromas of minerals, flowers, spices and red licorice. With its lively acidity, this wine conveys excellent precision and intensity to its wild plum and floral flavors. On the light side for Clos de Beze but the tannins are suave and fine-grained and the floral finish is refined, subtle and long. Spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate and pique the taste buds.
2018’ BH Score: 95 /Tasted: Apr 10, 2020 /Drink: 2036+ / Issue: 78 /♥Don’t miss!
Tasting note: This is more obviously 2018 in style with its intensely spicy and notably ripe aromas of plum, cassis and red currant that are markedly floral in character. The lilting and refined middle weight flavors possess evident minerality on the much more complex, longer and firmer finish. This is a beautifully elegant wine and while I often slightly prefer the Griotte chez Drouhin, in 2018 it appears that the Bèze is the more interesting of the two, at least at this early stage.
