2021’ BH Score: 89-92/Tasted: Jan 10, 2023/Drink: 2031+/Issue: 89
Tasting note: A more deeply pitched, and equally spicy, nose reflects notes of plum and various dark berries along with exotic tea hints that include jasmine and orange peel. As is usually the case, there is more size, weight and richness if less minerality and detail to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a velvety mid-plate along with excellent depth and persistence on the somewhat raspy and overtly austere finale that may be too much for some. I suspect that this too will better harmonize with time in bottle.
2020’ BH Score: 92-95/Tasted: Jan 10, 2022/Drink: 2035+/Issue: 85/♥Sweet spot Outstanding
Tasting note: A slightly riper nose blends notes of poached plum, anise, sandalwood and exotic jasmine tea. The rich, delicious and velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors possess impressive mid-palate density before terminating in a powerful and mouth coating finish that exhibits just a bit better length on the noticeably more structured finale. We will see in time as the Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts and Suchots are presently very close.
2019’ BH Score: 93/Tasted: Jan 10, 2022/Drink: 2034+/Issue: 85/♥Outstanding
Tasting note: A riper and less elegant but more complex nose combines notes of black raspberry, cassis, Asian-style tea and a plethora of exotic spice nuances, especially star anise and hoisin. There is excellent mid-palate density to the suave but relatively powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly attractive texture, all wrapped in a caressing, velvety and strikingly long finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This too is terrific, and it should be a knockout in time though it could likely be approached after only 7 to 8 years of keeping.
2018’ BH Score: 90-93 /Tasted: Jan 10, 2020 /Drink: 2033+ /Issue: 77 /♥Outstanding
Tasting note: This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it’s enough to mask the fruit. More interesting are the velvety, generous and extremely rich flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. As is usually the case, this is not as refined but it’s definitely more powerful.
2017’ BH Score: 90-93/Tasted: Jan 10, 2019/Drink:2029+/Issue:73/ ♥ Outstanding
Tasting note: Here too there is a touch of wood surrounding the even spicier and more deeply pitched dark currant aromas that display Asian-tea and sandalwood nuances. The supple, delicious and nicely vibrant medium weight flavors possess a succulent, even fleshy mid-palate, while displaying fine richness on the lingering finish. This isn’t quite as refined as the Beaux Monts but it’s still very good.
2016’BH Score:91-94/Tasted: Jan 15, 2018/Drink: 2026+/Issue:69/♥ Outstanding
Tasting note: Compared to the Beaux Monts, here the nose of plum, dark cherry and violets is spicier and a bit more deeply pitched if perhaps not quite as elegant. There is a really lovely inner mouth perfume to the richer and more seductively textured but less mineral-inflected flavors that conclude in a wonderfully long, stylish and classy finish. This also should drink reasonably well in its youth but age well too over the mid to perhaps even longer-term.
