2012’ BH Score: 97/Tasted: Jan 15, 2015 /Drink: 2032+/Issue: 57
Tasting note: A brooding but gorgeously spicy nose is comprised of liqueur-like dark berry fruit scents that also display plenty of floral influence that includes notes of lavender, violet and, somewhat curiously, honeysuckle. There is outstanding concentration and punch to the seductively textured and marvelously intense big-bodied flavors that are borderline robust as the supporting tannins are dense but refined. I really like the Zen-like sense of harmony to the explosively long and pungent mineral-driven finish that really stains the palate. This is flat out remarkable.
2009’BH Score: 96 /Tasted: Aug 28, 2015 /Drink: Try from 2034+ ♥Don’t Miss!!
Tasting note: Not surprisingly this still closely resembles the same wine in 750 ml (see herein for that review) and thus I repeat it here where the only difference is the projected drinking window: A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine.
2008’ BH Score: 96 / Tasted: Jan 01, 2011 / Drink: 2028+ / Issue: 41/ ♥ Don’t miss!
Tasting note: This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time.
2007’ BH Score: 95/Tasted: Jan 30, 2010/Drink: 2027+/Issue: 37
Tasting note: The step up in class is unmistakable with gorgeously complex, even kaleidoscopic and superbly elegant red, black and violet aromas trimmed with a dazzling array of spices, earth and a hint of smoke that adds unmistakable luster to the round, intense, muscular and exceptionally stylish broad-scaled flavors that possess excellent power and a building intensity that develops from the mid-palate to the explosive yet seductive finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the sappy and mineral-infused finish that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the firm tannins. This is a big ’07 built on a base of firm minerality but it remains impeccably well balanced and should live for decades so patience is definitely a virtue if you are a potential buyer.
2001’ BH Score: 96/Tasted: Jun 25, 2017/Drink: Try from 2021+
Tasting note: I have tasted this many times since I originally reviewed it and the ’01 Musigny has displayed quite a bit of bottle variation with some examples being fantastic and others being almost difficult to like. There is some secondary development now evident on the very spicy nose that also displays notes of sandalwood, soy, dried flowers and dried herbs on the mostly red berry fruit nose. There is fine detail and ample minerality present on the intense, powerful and focused medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impeccably good balance on the explosively long finish. For my taste this is getting close to its peak but it’s not quite there yet so I would suggest holding for another 2 to 4 years first. On the less impressive side, some bottles are drying out or have displayed lactic and/or cheese-like, menthol and rubber-like aromas that I have also found on a bottle of the Les Amoureuses (see herein).
