2019’ Descorchados Rating:96’,Tasted: Jan 2024
Little by little the style of Doña Bernarda, a classic in the LFE catalog, has been mutating toward greater freshness and fruit focus. We have seen this change for at least a couple of vintages, and in this new season, that idea is verified in a red that, despite its oak aging, what dominates are the soft and juicy fruits and tones of red fruits with spices and herbal notes. The tannins are firm, and the acidity is well placed to refresh a wine with a long life ahead of it. The first version of Doña Bernarda was the 1997, when Luis Felipe Edwards’ high-altitude vineyards were not yet mature enough to be up to the task of providing the fruit for the winery’s most ambitious wine. But since 2008, however, this has come from a selection of those vineyards. This year’s blend is 65% cabernet sauvignon, plus 25% syrah and 10% carmenere, all aged in barrels for two years. |
